With a matter of days before the Blues huge Challenge Trophy final, the Blues travel to the North East to face Spennymoor Town on Saturday.

With a trip to the Macron Stadium to face Chorley on Monday, Simon Garner’s men will be looking to go into the prestigious final on a high, with a big victory to their name.

Ofcourse it will be difficult against a side pushing for the play-offs but it has been seen this campaign that the Blues up their game against the league’s ‘big-boys’ and Clitheroe will be hoping to take another scalp in the form of The Moors.

The Blues have been consistently inconsistent since the turn of the year. Not many supporters would have backed Clitheroe to defeat promotion chasers Darlington 1883 last Saturday, however this result was quickly followed up by a 4-2 defeat against Warrington Town.

Since New Year’s Day, the men from Shawbridge have won five, drawn four and lost four of their thirteen fixtures. With the highlights coming during the 6-4 home win against Kendal Town, the aforementioned three points against the Quakers and ofcourse the Challenge Trophy semi-final victory against Atherton Collieries last month.

Tuesday evening’s defeat at Cantilever Park, home of Warrington Town was a strange game. With the Blues playing the better football and creating good chances, a twenty minute spell in which the home side scored four times ended the game as a contest.

However, with a young side on the pitch, Clitheroe can definitely take heart from the way they acquitted themselves against the play-off hopefuls.

Goals from David Lynch and Sefton Gonzales against Shaun Reid’s men meant the Blues have now scored two or more in all of their last four matches. Captain Lynch has also scored twice in this run, bringing his tally for the season to nine in all competitions, making him the side’s second top scorer.

The defeat against the Yellows midweek was only Clitheroe’s second defeat away from Shawbridge in 2015. Including four victories and two draws.

Only Warrington Town and Harrogate Railway Athletic have better away records than the Blues in the bottom half of the table. With the Blues picking up twenty one of their fourty five points on the road this season.

The Blues have already bettered their away record from last season though, with Clitheroe only winning twice away from Shawbridge during the 2013/14 season.

With wins against Ossett Albion and Burscough making them one of the worst away sides in the division during the respective season.

Sitting in 13th position in the division, the Blues sit twenty nine points above the relegation zone and have exceeded all expectations. After bookmakers made the club favourites for relegation during the summer of 2014.

This weekend’s in-form man is Louis Mayers. Despite not scoring the goals he would have liked, the former Padiham man has filled in on the wing and central midfield, aswell as in his favoured forward position.

Scoring the winning goal against Atherton Collieries last month, Mayers has used his pace and power to bully opposition defenders. In the process, creating space for Gonzales, Bent and co to cause havoc in attack.

Our opponents Spennymoor Town fourteen points (59) and seven places (6th) above the Blues going into Saturday’s fixture.

The men from County Durham are currently in pole position to jump into the play-off spots. With The Moors sitting just a point behind fifth placed Scarborough Athletic with two games in hand over the Sea Dogs.

Managed by former player Jason Ainsley, the side that play their home games at The Brewery Field have been in fine form of late. Losing just twice, 1-0 against Scarborough Athletic and 6-1 against Bamber Bridge in a run of eighteen games.

This run has also seen ten wins, catapulting the North-East side into play-off contention. In front of their own supporters, the Moors rarely drop points.

This season, Spennymoor Town have lost just twice at Brewery Field against Darlington 1883 and Bamber Bridge, two of the sides that currently sit in the league’s top five.

Spennymoor Town have picked up thirty three points from a possible fourty five at home. Winning ten of their last twelve games.

Scoring thirty and conceding just seventeen. Ainsley’s men have also collected six clean sheets from fifteen fixtures.

The Moors have the second best defence in the division, having conceded just twenty nine times in thirty games. With only Darlington 1883 (27 conceded in 32 games) having a better record.

Clitheroe were due to face Spennymoor Town on the 15th November 2014, however the bad weather put pay to that. Meaning the sides have still never met in league action.

Spennymoor Town only formed in 2005 and the Blues have always been in a higher division until this season.

However the teams did meet during the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying round of 2007/08. The Blues came out 8-2 winners. With goals from Heap, Sargeson, Dempsey and Fisher, followed up by braces from Jackson and Exton.

A win for Clitheroe could see them jump above Lancaster City in 12th position, with the Blues now eight points of Warrington Town who currently sit tenth in the league.

Three points for Spennymoor Town may see them go as high as fourth in the league, depending on how Scarborough Athletic and Bamber Bridge fare against Radcliffe Borough and Prescot Cables respectively.

With two games in hand, the Moor will be looking for a victory to keep alive their automatic promotion hopes, with the side nine points behind top side Darlington 1883.
