Clitheroe 3 Heaton Stannington 1
FA Isuzu FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round
Att. 447
Clitheroe were excellent value for this FA Trophy win against their good friends from Newcastle. With a debut for former Blackburn left back Lenni Cirino and a return for Emerich Poilly in midfield, Clitheroe quickly adapted to the new personnel and set about making the most of home comforts. On 8 minutes, Louis Potts was first to show and his first time piledriver forced a great save. Cirino was proving a thorn down the left flank and his push and go beyond his defender, followed by a sprint towards the bye line only just failed to make an opening in the box. Veron Parny had a shot form 15 yards superbly saved on 17 minutes, and he turned provider on the half hour when his sprint down the flank saw him slide the ball to Poilly who just failed to apply a finish. On 32 minutes, Stan had their first attack and should have done better when Hakan Burton palmed a shot away, with the deflection somehow eluding the two forwards on the back post. However, Clitheroe should have gone in one goal to the good when a great Parny run saw him deposit the ball on Sean McConville’s head four yards out and he somehow transpired to put the ball over the bar.
The home side had the best possible start to the second half, when within the first minute the lively Miles Storey put in a dangerous cross which induced a Stan defender to head into his own net. On 50 minutes, McConville almost made up for his earlier miss but his shot at the end of a flowing Clitheroe move was well saved. Five minutes later, Connor High doubled the lead when he settled on the edge of the box and picked his spot expertly beyond the diving keeper. Ten minutes later, Potts controlled a floated through ball from Storey and jinked before burying his shot from close range. Minutes later, he could have made it four, but his fierce shot from a floated pass over his shoulder thudded against the angle of the woodwork. As the clock ticked down, there was still stime for Stan to threaten with a goalmouth scramble, before they scored a consolation goal with minutes left. However, this was Clitheroe’s day and the win was never in doubt.
