A high quality game saw Gainsborough deservedly progress in the FA Trophy, but not before Clitheroe had given them a great run for their money.
The home side started brightly with a number of half chances, but it was the visitors who took the lead after a poor clearance was pounced upon and striker Javelle Clarke was clinical with his finish. Clitheroe kept their composure and after Emerich Poilly was fouled on the bye line after excellent work from Veron Parny, the resultant penalty was slotted away neatly by Luke Gill. Minutes later, Clitheroe should have taken the lead after overlapping wing back Jacob Hanson bore down on goal and his firm shot was narrowly pushed over by a firm hand from Dylan Wharton in the Gainsborough goal. Clarke had another good chance for the visitors when he hit the side netting from close range before Clitheroe’s Gill saw his cross steered just wide of the post.
Gainsborough took the lead shortly into the second half when the ever dangerous Declan Howe swayed left and right on the edge of the box before finishing superbly. Howe was proving a real thorn in the home side and it took a sliding tackle from Mark Hughes to foil him as he was ready to pull the trigger. Gill then forced a good save from Wharton with his legs, but back came Howe, making Clitheroe keeper Hakan Burton pull off a double save to foil him. The pressure finally told when a deep corner saw Will Lancaster increase the lead with a thumping back post header and as the clock ticked down, substitute Sisa Tuntulwana tacked across the edge of the box before scoring across the keeper.
