Clitheroe 7 Newcastle Town 1
Attendance: 569
Clitheroe were in control of the game for the first 70 minutes of the game with Newcastle playing a patient probing game, but after the visitors pulled the game back to 2-1, the game exploded and Clitheroe scored five further goals, with hat-tricks for the outstanding Sefton Gonzales and for Max Cane.
Gonzales opened the scoring on five minutes with a fine header from a Darren Holden cross. However, the game did not set on fire and the visitors were content to soak up pressure and to build patient attacks with some neat football. It took until the stroke of half time for the lead to double, with a long throw out by Chris Thompson feeding Reece Webb-Foster on the right, whose run and cross was easily converted by Cane.
Clitheroe came out hungrier in the second half and after a series of chances, out of the blue Newcastle broke away and Oliver Ritchie finished coolly to reduce the lead. From here onwards, Clitheroe slipped their chains. Callum Leigh hit the post on 69 minutes, before Gonzales was fouled in the box one minute later. He converted the penalty himself. Minutes later, Danny Wilkins fed a delicious pass for Cane to spring the offside trap before he chipped the keeper at full pace.
Wilkins was then the recipient of a pass from Gonzales and after a 30 yard run he eased round the keeper and walked the ball home. As the clock ticked down, Holden crossed on a sixpence for Gonzales to convert before one minute later, Cane received a through ball from Wilkins and he simply hammered home from the edge of the box.
