Attendance 259
The Blues were thankful for a contender of Worst Penalty Ever to take a point from this game.
The home side were first to have an effort on target after 8 mins but the shot on goal was weak and easily saved by Hakan Burton. A couple of minutes later they had a direct freekick but that hit the defensive wall and went out for corner. Clitheroe cleared the corner and broke away but the attack fizzled out before any shot was made.
The Blues then had a spell on top. On 11 minutes great work by Sefton Gonzales led to a cross from Matty Clarke being pushed out for a corner from which Domaine Rouse had a header saved. City of Liverpool then broke away and Hakan Burton had to be alert to push away a sliced clearance attempt at the near post. Sefton Gonzales had a header from corner cleared off the line after 19 minutes and then the game settled into a period of end-to-end action but with no real chances created. The home side had a long-range effort that sailed high and wide and their keeper foiled another Sefton Gonzales header just before the break.
The second half started brightly with City of Liverpool forcing a fingertip save from Hakan Burton to deny them the lead. The resulting corner was cleared quickly and Connor High was released down the right wing. He steadied himself before delivering an inch perfect cross for LUKE GILL to firmly head home as he advanced into the 6 yard box to give Clitheroe the lead after 46 minutes.
After another period of to-and-fro football the home side started to get on top. On 67 minutes a poor pass from Connor High was intercepted but the incoming shot was easily saved by Hakan Burton. Soon after a long kick from Hakan found Sefton Gonzales who controlled and laid the ball back to Connor High but his long-range shot went wide of the goal. City of Liverpool’s resurgence brought reward after 75 minutes when Matty Clarke was dispossessed deep into the home half, the ball quickly being played forward for their tricky winger to advance and fire home a well struck shot across Hakan Burton for the equaliser. Minutes later a Richard Baker freekick saw a looping header from Sefton Gonzales easily saved by their keeper.
City of Liverpool had a great chance to steal the points after 85 minutes as good approach play found their left back with a clear shot on goal but he drilled it wide of the target. They had an even better chance just a minute later as Jacob Hanson was judged to have kicked their player in the head as both went for a high bouncing ball and a penalty was awarded. The City of Liverpool player hit the ball hard and straight but also high, very high and it hit the last row of seats behind the goal! Clitheroe had the last chance of the game in added time after a good passing move found Connor High just outside the penalty area but he pulled his drilled shot wide again.
