Clitheroe 2 Sheffield 2
Att. 504
In an extraordinary game, Clitheroe and Sheffield shared the honours in a game littered with incident and controversy.
After a disappointing result at Mossley on Tuesday, Clitheroe were pleased to welcome back skipper Sam Olawumi to the heart of the defence. The game was a cagey affair in the first few exchanges, but on 7 minutes, Jacob Hanson burst down the right before sending Miles Storey down the line where his cross was met by Danny Wilkins, whose effort hit the bar. Seconds later, Clitheroe won a throw in and a long Lee Pugh effort was bundled home by Louis Potts. The game was then turned on its head when Sheffield quickly broke and Domaine Rouse ran diagonally across to tackle the player half way inside the home half. He arrived late and a yellow card was expected but the home crowd was dumbstruck when a straight red was issued. Potts should have doubled his tally minutes later when Storey headed a ball back into the box and Potts headed over. Further free kicks in dangerous positions were inexplicably given to the visitors and it was no great surprise when Javaun Splatt went shoulder to shoulder with an attacker and a penalty was awarded. Debutant Solomon Honor, on loan from Rovers, was equal to the task and guessed correctly to save the kick. Numbers were even when a Sheffield defender received his second yellow for a soft challenge and as the Clitheroe settled into the new reality, a Sheffield striker unleashed an outrageous half volley from outside the box into the absolute corner of the goal, giving Honor no chance. The half time whistle went virtually straight after.
The second half settled into a very attractive open game, with Clitheroe applying most urgency and attacking threat. On 63 minutes that changed when in a rare foray, a baffling free kick was given to Sheffield in a dangerous position. The strike was perfect and wrong footed Honor as the free kick evaded the side of the wall. Clitheroe were not daunted and shuffled their pack with two fresh attacking players brought on and they got their just rewards when a goal mouth melee with the ball rattling around in the area finally saw Hanson thump the ball gleefully home. Clitheroe increased the tempo yet further, but Sheffield held firm and earned home advantage in the replay.
